How to Crush Stage Fright

Whether you are performing a solo at a showcase, on stage with your band or acting in a theatre production, those nerves and jitters sometimes show up. We get it – stage fright happens to everyone, even seasoned professionals! But fear not, we are here to help you with these tips on crushing stage fright.

Preparation is your Superpower

The more prepared you are, the more confident you will feel. Practice, practice, practice! You should rehearse until your performance feels like it flows easily. That way when it comes time for you to perform in front of an audience, you are comfortable and know your part well.

Embrace the Energy

Even the most seasoned performers can become nervous and there is nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, stage fright means that you care and are passionate about what you do! Choose to channel that energy into enthusiasm and excitement to deliver an unforgettable performance. Keep your energy and your mindset in a positive direction.

“Stage fright is just energy, and we can choose to direct that energy into our performance.”

~ Real School Instructor and Musical Theatre Director Jake Stone

Be Present Before, During and After

Take a moment to breathe and focus before you go on to perform. Having a ritual before helps get you in the present moment and mindset. Once you are on stage, don’t try to rush or “just get through it”. That can lead to more anxiety during the performance. Instead, be present and focus on each next note or line one at a time. Afterwards, take time to be proud and reflect on the amazing job you just did.

Everyone Wants You to Succeed

Everyone who is in the audience is there in support of you and rooting for you to give it your best. They are not rooting for you to fail! Even if you miss a note or mess up a line, it is okay. Most people won’t even notice, and if they did, they understand. Everyone makes mistakes and you should feel proud that you are up there doing what you enjoy. Your instructors and directors will always be there to give you more support if you need it as well.

Now that you’ve got some tools to conquer your fears, GO! Get out there and show them the incredible talent, passion, and excitement you have for music and theatre. Your loved ones will be so excited to see you take to the stage – and you’ll be glad you did it, as well!
